“Everyone knows someone who has had cancer.”
In 1999 my mom was diagnosed with inflammatory breast cancer. She came from a poor background, descended from the Wahpeton Oyate Sioux tribe. As a result of lack of access to resources and education, she didn’t know where to start with her treatment journey and so crippled with anxiety and mistrust, she did nothing. My mom died less than a year later at the age of 39- just 4 years older than I am now. Since then I’ve spent my career working to improve the cancer patient experience for over 10 years, innovating from the ground up. Unfortunately, these inequities of care are still a problem today and disproportionately impact people of color, diverse geographies, and those with limited financial resources. The costs for cancer care are anticipated to grow to 34% by 2030, an area fueling the $97B digital health market. And while we are in an industry-wide digital health boom, only around 6% of available mobile applications target cancer with less than 3% citing clinician oversight. At Athelo we are here to be the scientific and community support I wish my mom had so many years ago and invite you to join the Athelo movement to democratize care for women everywhere.
